Short Courses

Committing to a graduate program can be a powerful vehicle for advancing one’s career, but choosing the right one can be a little daunting. What if you could test-drive different disciplines, programs, and schools to find the perfect fit?

This was the idea behind the “Introducing Social Media Analytics” course Wiley designed and developed in collaboration with Sorin Matei and the Purdue School of Communication on the FutureLearn platform. FutureLearn is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform that provides students with a 7-day free trial and then flexible monthly subscriptions.

This modular approach means the content is more portable and the learning experience is more flexible.

Using a three-credit hour course from Purdue University’s online Master of Science in Communication program as source material, we built an equivalent learning experience in FutureLearn's platform that divided the learning experience into several short modules that students could take at their own pace. This modular approach means the content is more portable and the learning experience is more flexible, allowing students to move at their own pace.

Whether completing a micro-certification or enrolling in a full graduate program, the combination of storytelling and practical demonstrations of core concepts motivated students to take the next step in their career journey.
