Exploring Physical Environments (Virtually)

The Purdue University College of Engineering is renowned for providing its students with a unique hands-on experience through their in-person labs and relationships with businesses and industry. One of the challenges in designing the Online Master of Science in Engineering Technology was finding a way to maintain that unique aspect of the program’s identity as it moved online.

In-person proximity and the ability to manipulate objects helps students understand engineering and specialized content in an immersive way that cannot be achieved just by technical drawings or documentation. To create that sense of context and connection, Wiley developed a set of interactive media elements that used 360 photography, video, and text to simulate physical environments for a facilities management course.

Bringing students into these facilities creates a memorable point of connection between what students are learning in the course and the real-world that elevates the online experience.

An interactive media piece such as this allows students to experience a guided-tour from a friendly expert, all without leaving the comfort of their laptop.
